What’s ACL repair surgery?

ACL repair surgery is a procedure that repairs a torn or ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in the knee. ACL tears most frequently occur during periods of intense sporting activity. Generally, surgery will involve replacing the damaged ligament using a graft, commonly from the patient's own tissue or from a donor. The aim is to restore stability and function to the knee joint, allowing patients to return to physical activity and everyday mobility.

Osama completed his medical degree at Monash university in 2009. He completed his orthopaedic training through the Australian Orthopaedic Association and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS).
 
Osama then worked as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at St. Vincent’s public hospital Melbourne, performing hip and knee replacements, arthroscopic knee surgery and managing orthopaedic trauma.
 
In 2020 and 2021, Osama undertook two overseas sub-specialty fellowships over 18 months, focusing on hip and knee arthroplasty.
 
The first 6 months were spent in Edinburgh, UK. This consolidated his skills in primary hip and knee replacement surgery, and furthered his training in complex cases including revision hip and knee surgery. This was followed by 12 months in Calgary, Canada, which included specific training in the direct anterior approach for hip replacement, and partial knee replacement. At both overseas centres, Osama was involved in the management of orthopaedic trauma.
 
Osama is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Australian Orthopaedic Association, and a member of the Canadian Arthroplasty Society.
 
Osama’s training and experience in Australia, the UK and Canada give him a well-rounded international perspective in the management of disorders affecting the hip and knee.

What are the payment options?

Insurance cover

For patients with top level private health insurance, hospital fees will be covered by your insurer, depending on your policy. You’ll need to contact your private health insurer to better understand their contribution towards fees and details on your health fund excess. 

Self-pay

Patients without health insurance or who want to be seen sooner than public wait lists allow, may opt to pay for surgical fees themselves. 

Superannuation

For patients with superannuation, you may be eligible for early release of your super as a means to fund ACL repair surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

You typically will need to get a referral from your GP before you attend your specialist consultation, in some cases this is not required. However, to receive a rebate from Medicare you will need to get a referral.
 
Note: You can still book your specialist consultation without a referral, you just need to ensure you get this referral prior to your consultation.
You can self-pay your surgery using your own savings/credit, or you can even consider applying for superannuation release to cover the costs of your surgery.
Every patient’s needs vary from one to the other. Typically, patients will be required to stay overnight, however, some may be able to go home on the day of surgery.
The initial weeks after surgery are crucial for successful long-term outcomes. Your specialist will advise how best to manage swelling as well as providing some physiotherapy exercises and scheduling follow up appointments.
