New childbirth simulator a world class training tool

St Vincent's Private Hospital Fitzroy

St Vincent’s Private Hospital Fitzroy has become the first Victorian hospital to use the world’s most advanced maternity and childbirth simulator to provide the highest level of obstetric training and care.

Unlike other mannequins or simulators, the MamaAnne takes training to a new level, blinking, breathing, moving and talking. Most importantly, she can deliver a baby mannequin during a simulated birth.

It allows midwives to experience complex birth scenarios in a safe environment and helps midwifery students practice delivering babies, including in emergency situations, before they ever step into a real delivery room.

MamaAnne can deliver in different positions and can be used to simulate emergency scenarios.

This includes postpartum blood loss, when a baby becomes stuck during delivery, pre-eclampsia and eclampsia and sepsis symptoms that require rapid treatment. She can also simulate neurological issues, seizures, breathing and heart rates so and staff and students are able to practice not only practice birthing skills, but also major bleeding, cannulation and general nursing skills.

St Vincent’s Hospital Fitzroy delivers around 2,000 babies each year. In 2025, our new maternity facilities opened, providing new state-of-the-art, luxurious birth suite and post-natal rooms for families to spend their first days with their new baby. Our newly upgraded Special Care Nursery has the advanced technology and a highly experienced and skilled team to look after babies with complex needs.
