Biography
Associate Professor Julian Maingard is a highly accomplished Interventional Neuroradiologist and Interventional Radiologist based in Melbourne. He currently serves as the Acting Director of Neurointervention and Interventional Radiology at St Vincent’s Hospital, and is the Clinical Lead for the Endovascular Clot Retrieval Service at Austin Hospital.
Associate Professor Julian Maingard graduated from the University of Melbourne in 2012. He undertook a medical and surgical residency at the Royal Melbourne Hospital from 2013-2014 and Radiology training at Austin and Monash Health before undertaking subspecialty training in Interventional Radiology and Neurointervention.He is registered by The Conjoint Committee for Recognition of Training in Interventional Neuroradiology in Australia (CCINR) and holds the European Board of Interventional Radiology (EBIR-Vienna).
Julian is actively involved in clinical research, specialist training and medical education. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and lectures nationally and internationally, with a strong interest in advancing neurointerventional techniques through evidence, research and innovation.
He was awarded the Early Career Researchers Prize in 2020 by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists for his investigational study on Rescue Intracranial Stenting After Failed Mechanical Thrombectomy for Acute Ischemic Stroke. Julian’s current research interests lie in endovascular therapy for acute ischaemic stroke, intracranial aneurysms and vertebral augmentation for both osteoporotic fractures and palliative cancer pain therapy. He has authored over 100 publications and 6 book chapters as well as presented both internationally and nationally in the field of Neurointervention.
His approach combines technical experitise with clear comminication and compassionate care, ensuring that every patient understands their diagnosis, treatment options and recovery.
