Associate Professor Sonny Palmer is a Consultant Cardiologist with subspecialty expertise in coronary artery and adult structural heart disease.Sonny graduated from The University of Melbourne and completed his clinical training in Cardiology at St Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne. He completed subspecialty training in Coronary and Structural Heart Intervention at St Vincent’s Hospital and then underwent further subspecialty training at James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, United Kingdom.
Sonny holds public appointments at The Alfred and Eastern Health. He has also provided specialist cardiology services to Gippsland since 2014.
Sonny performs balloon aortic valvuloplasty, transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI, ViV TAVI, ViV TMVR), transcatheter mitral valve edge to edge repair (TEER), patent foramen ovale (PFO) and atrial septal defect (ASD) closure.
Sonny also specialises in cardiovascular risk factor assessment and management of coronary artery disease including coronary angiography, percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI, FFR, coronary lithotripsy) and invasive coronary imaging (OCT, IVUS).
Sonny is a Clinical Associate Professor at The University of Melbourne. He was awarded his Doctorate at The University of Melbourne in 2016. He was the recipient of the prestigious National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and the National Heart Foundation (NHF) scholarships. He is actively involved in clinical research and has published in peer-reviewed journals. He has been involved in several pioneering interventional trials. He is a supervisor of higher research degree candidates, FRACP physician trainees, junior doctors and Doctor of Medicine students.
