Biography
A/Prof Koroush Haghighi is a recognised hepatopancreatobiliary and transplant surgeon. A consultant specialist at Prince of Wales and St Vincent’s public and private hospitals in Sydney, he has completed training and fellowships in Australia, the UK and the USA to become one of the most prominent practitioners in his field.
A/Prof Haghighi is known for delivering personalised, accessible and highly responsive care that reflects his desire to help patients return to their everyday lives.He received his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Adelaide (1994), and completed his basic surgical training at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (1994-96) and advanced surgical training at Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney (1997-2002). He was subsequently awarded the Paul McMaster Fellowship in HPB & Liver Transplantation from the Australian and New Zealand Hepatic, Pancreatic and Biliary Association (2004-5) which he undertook at the Queen Elizabeth and Birmingham Children’s Hospitals in the UK. He has also completed an Abdominal Multiorgan Transplantation Fellowship from the Mayo Clinic Rochester in the USA (2005-6).
Today, A/Prof Haghighi performs 160 major pancreatic and liver surgeries every year and has completed more than 2400 over the course of his career. He performs both venous and arterial resections for complete tumour removal and uses NanoKnife and microwave techniques as adjunct techniques. He also uses NanoKnife to treat locally advanced pancreatic cancers that are unresectable in the absence of metastatic disease.
In addition to his clinical work, A/Prof Haghighi is a conjoint academic in surgery at the University of New South Wales, Australia and is actively engaged in research at UNSW, focused on improving treatments for patients with pancreatic and liver cancer, with involvement in international clinical trials and studies. Among A/Prof Haghighi’s many professional accreditations, he is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a member of the Australian, international, American and European associations of hepatopancreatobiliary surgeons.
