Biography
Dr Richard Laherty is a neurosurgeon and spine surgeon operating at St Vincent's Private Hospital Northside.
Dr Laherty offers care for patients across the range of neurosurgery including oncology and trauma. His subspecialisation is spine surgery, the work-up and surgical management of adults with spine problems including degenerated discs and herniations, spinal canal and foraminal stenoses, spinal deformity, spine tumours, infections and trauma.Drawn to the complexities and challenges of spine surgery during his training, Dr Laherty has sought broad exposure to further education and experience in the field. He has trained and worked in both orthopaedic and neurosurgical spinal units and now contributes to the training of the next generation of spine surgeons.
Driven by the notion that less surgical trauma is desirable, Dr Laherty utilises a range of minimally invasive techniques, including approaches from anteriorly, laterally and posteriorly, with carefully considered strategies, reducing hospital length of admission and aiding recovery. He takes a collaborative approach, including patients, their referrers and associated healthcare staff in decision-making.
Dr Laherty is a Senior Lecturer with the University of Queensland’s School of Medicine and is a member of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Academy of Surgical Educators, serving as faculty on programmes including the Early Management of Severe Trauma, the Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient and the Operating With Respect courses and on the college-approved Definitive Surgical Trauma Care course.
From general neurosurgery to complex spine surgery, Dr Laherty looks forward to helping care for your patients. Please do not hesitate to contact him with any questions regarding patients you are considering for referral.
