Biography

Dr Shivesh Varma is a fellowship-trained specialist in vitreoretinal surgery and medical retina.

His areas of interest include retinal detachment, macular surgery, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and complex cataract surgery, including scleral-fixated intraocular lenses and iris repair.

Shivesh completed his ophthalmology training at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, followed by advanced Vitreoretinal Fellowships in Perth and Melbourne, with further subspecialty training in New York, London, and Oxford. He currently holds consultant appointments at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, Monash Health, and the Royal Children’s Hospital, and remains actively involved in teaching and research.

Shivesh sees surgical care not only as a technical craft but also as a responsibility to guide and support patients through uncertainty—with clarity, empathy, and their best interests at heart.

Better and fairer care. Always.

In a rapidly transforming world, St Vincent's has created a refreshed vision and strategy to help shape Australia's health and aged care future.
