Biography

Juliet Clayton is a Melbourne Neurosurgeon with special interests in congenital malformations of the brain and spine including antenatal advice, hydrocephalus, tumours of the brain and spine, Chiari malformation and syringomyelia, craniosynostosis, neuroendoscopy and spinal surgery (non-instrumented).

Juliet trained in medicine at Aberdeen University before following neurosurgical training, which she completed in the United Kingdom in 2008. She then travelled to Australia to further her experience with a paediatric fellowship at the RCH in Melbourne and the paediatric units in Brisbane. She gained her FRACS in Australia in 2012. Since 2013 Juliet has been a member of the consultant team at the RCH, Melbourne where she thoroughly enjoys managing the varied and often challenging range of conditions, presenting as early as in a pre-term infant to adulthood. Juliet finds this role, which allows her to follow children as they grow into adulthood, highly rewarding and an absolute privilege.

Juliet often works within an MDT framework, alongside like-minded passionate clinicians such as the role she performs with the craniofacial plastic surgeons in the treatment of craniosynostosis. Juliet holds an honorary position at the RWH where she joins the FMU to provide maternal or antenatal advice for conditions requiring neurosurgical monitoring or intervention. Juliet brings her broad range of skills and extensive experience to her adult neurosurgical practice where she continues to look after young adults, often recently transitioned from paediatric care but also many older adults.

She is especially interested in the management of hydrocephalus and chiari malformation but is also happy to see and manage a wide range of neurosurgical conditions in her adult practice, including more common spinal degenerative disease. Juliet is proud to be a Senior Instructor on the RACS EMST (Early Management of Severe Trauma) course.
