Biography

Prof Phong Tran is a Melbourne orthopaedic surgeon specialising in hip, knee and shoulder surgery.

His main operations are anterior hip replacement, subvastus knee replacement, and hip, knee and shoulder arthroscopy. He also performs hip labral repair, rotator cuff repair and shoulder replacement.

The anterior approach to the hip and the subvastus approach to the knee both reach the joint between muscles, leaving the main muscles uncut, with the aim of an easier early recovery.

Prof Tran graduated from Monash University in 1999 and completed orthopaedic training in 2007. In 2009 he undertook fellowship training in Germany in sports injury and in shoulder and knee arthroscopy. In 2010 he completed further fellowship training in hip arthroscopy and anterior hip replacement.

He has been Head of Orthopaedic Surgery at Western Health since 2010, where he runs an orthopaedic fellowship program and an active research program. He holds adjunct professorships at Melbourne, Victoria and Swinburne universities and has published more than 80 peer-reviewed papers.
