Expanding occupational therapy services into Uspace

St Vincent's Private Hospital Sydney

We are proud to announce the expansion of our Occupational Therapy (OT) department services to include a group-based therapy program aimed at enhancing Uspace patients' participation in activities of daily living. The OT department has been working closely with the multidisciplinary Uspace team to provide young individuals with the skills and support they need to engage in meaningful activities, including self-care, leisure, education, and work.

The program focuses on building essential life skills through a practical, hands-on approach and aims to improve physical, mental, and emotional well-being, promote independence, and provide a sense of normalcy and routine for patients. The OT team provides a safe and supportive environment for patients to explore their interests and capabilities, set achievable goals with the necessary support and resources, and work closely with all USpace team members to build confidence, self-esteem, and independence.

The program includes skill building activities aimed at enhancing each participant's knowledge and implementation of strategies across multiple areas including sensory modulation, behavioural activation, activity of daily living training, money management, job readiness, and social skills. Sensory modulation refers to the ability to regulate one's response to sensory stimuli in an adaptive manner, and behavioural activation refers to an evidence-based treatment approach used to increase engagement in activities that are enjoyable and meaningful, with the goal of improving mood and overall well-being.

The OT department is dedicated to providing high-quality, evidence-based care to our patients. With the expansion of services to include this innovative group-based therapy program, the OT department continues to demonstrate its commitment to improving the lives of young individuals facing mental health challenges, particularly those with conditions such as anxiety, depression, and ADHD. The OT department's expansion of services demonstrates the hospital's ongoing commitment and long history of providing comprehensive, patient-centred care and improving the lives of those in the community, aligning with the mission of St Vincent's Health Australia.

Better and fairer care. Always.

In a rapidly transforming world, St Vincent's has created a refreshed vision and strategy to help shape Australia's health and aged care future.
