The centre has the capacity to deliver over 10,000 radiotherapy treatments annually and features an experienced team of radiation oncologists, radiation therapists, nurses and support staff with access to the latest technology designed to improve treatment precision, patient experience and clinical outcomes.
St Vincent’s Private Hospitals Queensland CEO, Oli Steele, said the opening of the service marked a significant milestone for cancer care in Brisbane’s north.
“This new centre is about improving access and convenience for patients in Brisbane’s north and ensuring they can receive comprehensive cancer treatment close to home,” Mr Steele said.
“Cancer care increasingly involves a combination of treatments, including surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. By bringing these services together at Northside we can provide a more seamless experience for patients and stronger collaboration between clinical teams.
“Around half of all cancer patients will require radiotherapy as part of their treatment. Having this service available on-site means patients can now receive world-class care in one location, reducing the burden of travelling between different facilities during what is often a very challenging time.
“The opening of the new Icon Cancer Centre is an important step in strengthening cancer care services at Northside. We’re proud of our partnership with Icon and the opportunity it provides for patients to access high-quality radiation oncology care close to home,” said Mr Steele.
Icon Cancer Centre Australia & New Zealand CEO, Paul Fenton, said the new facility represented a major investment in cancer care for Brisbane’s north.
“We are delighted to welcome our first patients and officially commence radiotherapy services at Icon Cancer Centre St Vincent’s Northside,” Mr Fenton said.
“This centre combines highly experienced radiation oncologists and clinical teams with advanced radiotherapy technology, enabling us to deliver precise, personalised treatment.
“Patients now have access to innovative technologies including HyperArc, an advanced stereotactic radiosurgery platform designed to treat brain tumours and multiple brain metastases with exceptional accuracy, as well as Surface Guided Radiation Therapy, which enables real-time patient monitoring and tattoo-free treatment for many patients.”
“This service strengthens access to world-class radiation oncology services for Brisbane’s north and ensures more patients can receive life-saving treatment close to where they live and receive their broader care in one location,” said Mr Fenton.
The centre will be led by some of Brisbane’s leading radiation oncologists: Prof Mark Pinkham, Dr Michelle Grogan, A/Prof Jim Jackson, Dr Minjae Lah and Dr Dominic Lunn.
Alongside advanced treatment technologies, the centre will also provide specialist support services, including access to a dedicated Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia credentialled Prostate Cancer Specialist Nurse to support patients throughout their treatment journey.
Radiotherapy is a safe and highly effective cancer treatment used to treat a broad range of cancers, including breast, prostate, skin, lung and brain cancers. Approximately 50 per cent of all cancer patients will require radiotherapy as part of their treatment.
