Biography

Dr Howard Mutsando is a Haematologist at Icon Cancer Centre Toowoomba. He also visits inpatients and patients in the Oncology Centre at St Vincent's Private Hospital Toowoomba.

Dr Howard Mutsando is committed to delivering compassionate and exceptional haematology care closer to home for regional patients. He brings an evidence-based approach to his practice to achieve the best possible outcome for his patients.

He relocated to Toowoomba in 2013 to practice as a clinical and laboratory haematologist. Dr Mutsando completed his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) in Zimbabwe before moving to Ipswich Hospital, Queensland to complete residency and physician training. He gained dual haematology fellowship with both the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) and Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (FRCPA) after training at the Princess Alexandra Hospital and Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in Brisbane, Queensland.

Dr Mutsando is passionate about delivering comprehensive care to haematology patients living in rural and regional areas. He actively promotes multidisciplinary patient care, working with peers, primary care physicians and allied health professionals to improve patient outcomes. He has kept close networks with colleagues at tertiary centres to ensure that his patients have timely access to treatment options that may not be available locally, including trial therapies.

Dr Mutsando maintains a strong interest in medical education and clinical research. He is a regular participant in educational activities for trainees and general practitioners. Dr Mutsando is a site principal investigator on a number of clinical trials and a senior lecturer with the University of Queensland. He has co-authored several haematology articles in national and international publications and holds memberships with the Australasian Leukaemia and Lymphoma Group (ALLG) and Haematology Society of Australia and New Zealand (HSANZ). He readily utilises telemedicine to manage patients living in distant locations and communicate with local doctors about the management of their patients.
