When English is not your first language, we’ll provide an interpreter to help you

Patients, their families and carers who do not speak English as a first language (or who are hearing impaired) can request a professional interpreter during their hospital stay.

An interpreter will help you to understand what a staff member is saying, help you to ask questions and ensure that you get accurate information.

While family members may be able to interpret for you, it’s important to have an independent interpreter. That way you can be clear about your medical rights and options while ensuring that your confidentiality is respected.

You can request an interpreter when you fill out the hospital pre-admission form, or ask for one at any time during your stay.

We have interpreters available 7 days a week.

Our interpreters

At St Vincent’s Private Hospitals we use only accredited or recognised health care interpreters who are fully compliant with our patient confidentiality policy.

Types of interpreter

Please check your relevant hospital below for their specific services. **Not all services are available at all hospitals.

During your hospital stay you may be offered:

  • A face-to-face interpreter. This means the interpreter is in the room with you and the doctor, nurse or other staff member.
  • A telephone interpreter. This means the interpreter is on the telephone while you are with the doctor, nurse or other staff member
  • Qualified Auslan (sign language) interpreters are available if you have impaired hearing

What’s the difference between an interpreter and a translator?

An interpreter is a person trained in translating the spoken word whereas a translator is used for translating written text.

In hospital we use interpreters to enable you and the staff to communicate clearly with each other.
