Biography

Dr Richard Baker is a consultant psychiatrist who holds additional sub-specialist qualifications in Forensic Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. He is the Deputy Medical Director and an admitting psychiatrist at the Young Adult Mental Health Service (Uspace) at St Vincent's Private Hospital Sydney. Dr Baker holds a public appointment as a Senior Staff Specialist with the Justice Health and Forensic Mental Health Network.

Dr Baker is a medical doctor and completed a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. He completed his medical internship and residency at St Vincent’s Public Hospital, Sydney. He completed his medical specialist training in psychiatry at St Vincent's Public Hospital Sydney, The Prince of Wales Hospital, The Black Dog Institute, The Forensic Hospital and The Sydney Children's Hospital in Randwick. He has completed a Master of Psychiatric Medicine at the NSW Institute of Psychiatry/HETI. He has completed a Master of Forensic Mental Health (with Excellence) at the University of New South Wales.
Dr Baker has an academic appointment as a Conjoint Lecturer with the School of Psychiatry at the University of New South Wales where he is involved in both teaching and research. He has published papers in peer reviewed medical journals on topics relating to general psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry and paediatrics. He is a reviewer for the peer reviewed medical journal Australasian Psychiatry. He is involved in specialist medical training and supervises doctors completing general psychiatry, and sub-specialist child and adolescent psychiatry and forensic psychiatry. He is an accredited supervisor with the RANZCP. He is also a panel member for the NSW Medical Council. 
He has a special interest in assessments for young people with mental illness in contact with the criminal justice system. He has experience managing anxiety disorders, mood disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, eating disorders, addiction, personality disorders, psychotic disorders and neurodevelopmental disorders (including intellectual disability, learning disorders, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and autism spectrum disorder).
