During your pregnancy

Whether you’re a first time mother or an experienced parent, you’re likely to have questions and concerns as your pregnancy progresses.

Here are 5 things you can add to your to-do list to help make your pregnancy journey smooth and trouble-free.

Take care of your body

As your baby grows inside you, you need to look after yourself by adopting healthy habits. By taking part in regular physical activity and eating a balanced diet of freshly-prepared food, you’ll set yourself up to tackle the challenges your body will face in giving birth and caring for your new baby.

Enrol in maternity education classes

Our hospitals offer online education classes for you and your partner. Topics include preparing for birth, breastfeeding, bathing your baby, and baby first aid.

Get a whooping cough (pertussis) vaccination

The best time to be vaccinated against whooping cough is in the second trimester (preferably at 20 weeks). This will provide early protection for you and your baby as the antibodies pass to your baby in the womb. We advise partners and other close family members to be immunised as well.

Look after your emotional wellbeing

Pregnancy can be a stressful time. Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance if you’re struggling to cope. Talk to your obstetrician and/or ask to see one of our social workers if you need extra help.

Make a birth plan

Talk to your obstetrician about what kind of birth you would like for you and your baby. We’ll do everything we can to provide you with personalised care and make your plan a reality.

Your maternity questions answered

No, while we are a private maternity hospital, you don’t need to have private health insurance to give birth with us. Many mothers choose to self-pay their birth and pay the full out-of-pocket costs. We are happy to provide you with more details on estimated fees; please click here to enquire.

If you’re planning to self-pay for your birth, your estimated hospital expenses must be paid prior to admission. Any additional costs incurred during your stay are payable on discharge.

We have set fees for the maternity stay for both vaginal and caesarean births and are happy to provide you with these on your request. Our fees are based on either a three (vaginal birth) or four (caesarean birth) night admission and include labour and delivery, theatre (if applicable), accommodation, pharmacy and all patient meals.

It is important to note that certain other fees are additional, including Obstetrician, Anaesthetist (if applicable), Paediatrician, and Special Care Nursery should your baby need to receive treatment there. You may request more information on private pay fees by clicking here.

After meeting your chosen obstetrician in their rooms, they will notify us of your booking.  We will send you an email with a link for you to register your birth with us.

To do so, you will need access to your mobile phone and the following information:

  • Current Medicare and private health insurance (if applicable) details
  • Medical and surgical history including list of medications and dosages
  • Personal and next of kin details.

Once submitted, you will receive a confirmation email from us (be sure to check spam/junk folders) regarding next steps.

For complete instructions on registering for your birth online, please click here.

Once your booking has been confirmed and processed by our team, you should continue to follow up regularly with your Obstetrician, who will oversee all of your care throughout until it is time for baby to be born. In the event that any maternal or fetal monitoring is needed at the Hospital during your pregnancy, your Obstetrician will guide you through coming to St Vincent Private Hospital if necessary.

If you are a member of a health fund, it is important to check the following prior to your hospital admission:

  1. If your health fund will cover the cost of your obstetric admission and hospital stays.
  2. If you have been a member of your health fund for less than 12 months, your fund may not accept liability for the costs of admission. We recommend to check with private health fund.
  3. Check if your fund covers additional charges such as pharmacy, pathology, imaging and x-rays.
  4. If your fund covers medical and allied health practitioner fees as these cost are not included in the hospital costs.
  5. If your private health insurance does not cover maternity services, contact our friendly staff for a self-funded options. You can contact them by clicking here.
